Maine Gov. Janet Mills is delivering a direct message to the Canadian people amid a trade war with the United States.
Mills has written an op-ed in Canada’s largest newspaper, the Toronto Star, and said that rising costs are hurting Mainers.
“We share more than a border with Canada — we share an economy, a history, friendships and families, and a way of life. Our relationship does not belong to any one president or prime minister. It belongs to the everyday Mainers and Maritimers who can pull up a chair at Tim Hortons, do business together, and lend a hand when a neighbour needs one.”
Mills said the trade war is killing manufacturing opportunities, and putting small businesses, millworkers, and rural communities in the crosshairs of a fight they did not start.
The new tariffs being levied by the Trump administration against Canada are expected to go into effect in the next week.
