Republican State Senator Jeff Timberlake is planning to call for an investigation of fraud in Maine’s Medicaid program.
The Bangor Daily News reports Timberlake’s plan follows the unearthing of a report showing possible widespread fraudulent billing for interpreter services through Medicaid in Maine dating back 14 years.
The report shows a federal investigator identified a concerning pattern in Maine’s Medicaid program in 2021.
The Daily News reports the investigator found that providers in Maine were billing for suspiciously high levels of interpreter services in a pattern of waste, abuse or fraud.
The federal investigator found interpreter claims surged by 283 percent between 2011 and 2017
The newly unearthed report comes after the state suspended payments to Gateway Community Services in Portland for overbilling for Medicaid services by more than $1 million in 2021 and 2022.
State Republicans have asked for a federal investigation over the issue as well.
