South Portland police say a woman who was placed in custody managed to take control of the police cruiser and speed away.

Police responded to a disturbance call on Clarks Pond Parkway around 11:10 p.m. Sunday. They said a male, later identified as 47-year-old Wesley Fournell, fled on foot when officers arrived. A woman, 29-year-old Alexis Irving, was found near a vehicle that police say was stolen during a burglary in Biddeford earlier that day and contained stolen items.

Police said Irving managed to climb into the driver’s seat of the police cruiser and drive off. Officers tracked the vehicle to Biddeford where Irving was again taken into custody.

Fournell was later found in the area and also taken into custody.
